Universalized Religion

I think that religion diffused so rapidly throughout the world during this time period as a result of the fall of the great empires. The Roman Empire had dissolved, China was split into three, and there was no major political power during this era. People were lost and confused. They needed order and structure, so they turned to religion. The new religions provided stability while filling the void of political power as a result of the lack of government.

  1. I agree with Marie Antoinette's opinion. It is clear that under dissolving empires and no sign of strong leadership the people were looking for a solid force to turn to. Religion helped anchor people in times of great chaos and that is exactly what the people of the former Roman and Han empires needed. No matter which religion people adopted, it gave them a reason behind all the calamity around them and in turn they tried to become better people because of it.

  2. I agree with this completely. With lack of stability and structure, people lose unity. Religion is the perfect way to unite. Its basis is faith and hope, and those two words ease disunited peoples. With the fall of the Roman Empire due to lack of a stable leader and other reasons, as well as the fall of the Han Empire. The people of these empires needed to turn to something they could trust, something bigger than themselves.

  3. I agree with this. With no clear leadership and no structure the people wanted something to follow and have hope for. This is why they turned to religion to help guide them. The lack of stability in the Roman and Han empire led to their fall, turning their people to find something else for leadership, stability, and hope. Religion brought people closer and gave them more purpose.
