After the Han and Roman empires collapsed, there was a 300 year period in which no dominant, or even strong, political leader took affirmative action. Although the empires had fallen, life still had to go on and religion was able to reach a mass amount of people that other wise would have many differences, and unite all under a common, structured, belief system. Perhaps this theory seems a little too fundamental to have been able to maintain peace for such a long period, but matched with the fundamental beginning arising after the detrimental fallen empires, it is completely logical that inhabitants indeed grouped with those that had the same values. After all, their once loyal habits had to be redirected elsewhere.

I agree that it is a very fundamental idea and people with similar values will join together through religion. If people have similar beliefs then they will form a structured society like you stated. There was no need for a great empire. The fall of the empires left people with no one to look to for guidance so God replaced the role as an emperor.

God was looked at as a replacement as an emperor. Great empires at the time were non existent and there was a lack of leadership in society. I agree with Duncan Hines and his beliefs for the fundamentals of religion during this time period. The people were in search of a leader and looked toward god and religion to bring order to their lives.

I agree that it seems to be a little too fundamental, however it is a good theory. People were so used to having a leader and strong centralized government. After the fall of their respected empires, the Han and Roman people needed some type of direction to guide them in order to move on. The thought of religion as a guide is a good theory as to why religion played such an influential role during this time.
