Why the Rise of Universalizing Religion?

With the downfall of the Roman & Han Empires, religion became the easiest way to characterize large groups of people and a way for society to rebuild itself. People no longer had to focus on war and controversy between societies which lead to the vast spread of religion throughout Europe, Asia & Africa.

  1. I disagree with this comment. I believe characterizing large groups of people together was just a result of religion rather than the reason why the universalization of religion took place. Although I do agree with the second half of this comment, with the idea that there was less conflict between societies giving people the chance to examine themselves internally. I believe much of this universalization occurred because of a right time, right place theory. Religions were being heavily introduced and people were exposed to them greatly during this time period, a time period where they could take the time to join a religion. Had this process gone on much earlier in time or much later in time it is possible to say the great spread of religion we saw occur may not have occured in this way.

  2. I agree with this statement. After the fall of the Roman and Han empires, people needed a new way to characterize themselves, rather than be identified with who their ruler was or where they lived. Religion provided a new way to relate to huge groups of people. The textbook focuses on the religious aspect of the world because at the time, this was the most convenient way to characterize people.
