Bacardi and The Long Fight for Cuba witten by Tom Gjelten is an interesting story about the beginnings og Bacardi Rum and the familys involvement in Cubas revolution. Majority of the story is on how Emilio Bacardi turned his run company into the one we know it as today. While Emilio was a very well known business man, he was also involved in the fight against Spanish rule. He became a prominent figure in the revolution and although he was arrested twice he became the city of Santiago's mayor.
If you enjoy a long 369 page history lesson you would like this book. It is full of facts, stories and a fair amount of pictures. I enjoyed reading this book.

Were the Bacardis involved in anyway with the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro?

Very intresting how one family and rum can effect a revolution.

This seems very interesting, especially since Obama has thoughts about loosening the embargo on Cuba.

This book sounds very interesting in the way it draws a connection between something we are familiar with today. Was it written as mainly facts or did it seem like a story?

It is interesting to find out where this company came from and to know all about it. This seems like an interesting book and relates to my book with rebellion!

This book seems like a good read just reading what it is about but I dont think that i would be able to handle a 369 page history lesson.

I saw Gjelten speak two years ago about Cuba and he was pretty interesting. He said, basically, that the nation is full of people who are incredibly kid, generous, and considerate, but they will also keep tabs on each other, and the communists give rewards to the most loyal party members. Rewards = telephones, cars, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt must be tough to have the physical condition of your life depend upon your ability to adhere to a strict party line.
