History in Three Keys: The Boxers as Event, Experience and Myth

For anyone who would like to know infinite details about the Boxer Rebellion and Westerners in China, definitely put this on your reading list. The book has three parts, the first being the actual boxer event; what was recorded in history. The second talks about what the missionaries and Christian Chinese converts went through during the event. Many of them were killed and there churches burnt. Women also played an important role because the Boxers believed that women possessed special powers and could control the outcome of a battle and even control the winds. I found that to be the most interesting part. Finally the third discusses some myths and rumors about the Boxer Rebellion that were true and not true.
The book had a few cartoons and pictures that were very interesting. The book could have been about half of the length and been even better. Overall I would say the book was mediocre and would not recommend it for a summer read.

  1. Excellent. If you are recommending that the book should be taken off the list, I will take your advice, but do you think there are portions of the third part of the book that would be worth including in the course readings?

  2. It seems to me that you enjoyed the pictures and cartoons more than the book. Thanks for the warning about this book.
