The Bottom Billion

Paul Collier discusses the reasons why the poorest people in the world are poor, and why they are staying that way. He mentions four development traps which are halting the growth of the bottom billion countries and how to defeat those traps. Collier explains that it isn't how much aid you provide a country but the type of aid you are providing. He even states that some aid can be detrimental to a countries growth.

  1. This book sounds extremely interesting. I am also very curious to learn how, "..some aid can be detrimental to a countries growth". Does this book work off a variety of different countries?

  4. This book interests me very much because there are still a lot of people in poverty today and it would be nice to see how the author thinks we can help. I never thought that some types of aid could hurt people and it would be interesting to find that out.

  8. There's definitely a lot that could be said about direct aid and its usefulness in the fight against poverty. What I'm curious about is the degree to which individuals can effect meaningful change in the system that currently exists. How can any one individual affect the terms of loans made by the World Bank?
