The medical marijuana business is booming and with Barack Obama trying to keep the government out of this topic who knows what will happen. All that is known is that some believe that it will be legalized in numerous states in the next decade. Some also think that with the legalization of marijuana it could help the economic crisis. 1. With this current economic crisis, the legalization of marijuana should be looked into more. Like you said, the shops in California make a ridiculous amount of money, just think about how that could help the economy if it was legalized in all states. If marijuana can be used for medical reasons, then I don't see why it would be wrong to be accessible to the public. There are even facts to say that it is safer than alcohol and not as addictive as tobacco. It makes sense that it can reduce some crimes because it would decrease the flow of money from the American economy to criminal gangs. The fact is that prohibition has failed to control the use of marijuana, and if people are doing it, might as well make it legal.
This article has Time CNN talking about the legalization of marijuana: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1889021,00.html

  2. Well, just on principle, I have to take the other side of the argument.

Though the use of Marijuana creates an aura of happiness, what happens afterwards also has to be considered. Those addicted to marijuana often spend their life savings and often more! These then-impoverished people often turn to crime or simply dig themselves deeper into debt. If the drug is addictive, legalizing marijuana will only increase its user base and add to the already monumental problem. I really don't see how this outcome can benefit anyone.

  3. Marijuana has in fact been proven to be less addictive than tobacco and alcohol, and less dangerous. Tobacco has killed over 100 million people over the course of the 20th century and 140 million people currently suffer from alcoholism. Marijuana however has not been attributed with any fatalities and studies prove that there is little to no risk of dependance yet it is illegal. This baffles me.

  4. The legalization of marijuana should definitely be made top priority of the government, as it will definitely raise happiness in the nation. The non-addictive qualities of marijuana also make it safer than tobacco and alcohol. The criminalization of marijuana is also unconstitutional, because rights not given to the government are reserved to the people. If you look at the facts it is obvious that marijuana is no worse than alcohol or tobacco, and should be legalized.

  5. In response to Lenin's comment, I find it hard to believe that one could think that one of the most lucrative cash crops could not benefit anyone. And thats not even considering the vast medical uses of marijuana. Marijuana provides comfort to cancer and AIDs patients globally. Also Marijuana has been proven to have no addictive components. On top of that, I think that describing impoverished Marijuana users as a monumental problem is like saying flying pig infestations are a monumental problem... its just not true.

  7. My comment is in response to Lenin. First and foremost I find it quite hard to believe that one can think marijuana does not benefit anyone when it is one of the most lucrative cash crops. And thats not considering its medical benefits. Cancer and AIDs patients all over the world are subject to extreme pain and marijuana provides them comfort. Also marijuana has been proven to have no addictive components, while alcohol and tobacco can be extremely addictive, yet they are legal. Finally, describing marijuana users as a monumental problem is like saying flying pig infestations are a monumental problem... its just not. Oh one last thing - stereotyping marijuana users as hoodlems who spend their life savings is just wrong.
