The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the first Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805

The Pirate Coast is a historical account of how a handful of Marines along with General William Eaton embarked on America's first overseas covert op. They were sent over by Jefferson's administration to rescue many soldiers, whose ship the USS Philadelphia, ran aground in Tripoli harbor. They trekked across the brutal Sahara desert in an endeavor to free these American soldiers that were captured and enslaved by Barbary pirates. This heroic novel was interesting but, at times it was drawn out and boring. I recommend it to only those who are interested in this topic because the story is more of a documentary then an action-packed novel.

  1. Although in a different time period (I believe), there are probably many parallels between this book and "The Republic of Pirates".
